I.Executive Summary

Bakersfield’s Bug Zoo offers an interactive experience for visitors, where they can experience the sights, sounds, and smells of live creepy crawlies, including giant cockroaches, beetles, walking and prickly sticks, praying mantises, centipedes, scorpions, and tarantulas.

Garden spiders may not be your cup of tea, but seeing a goliath tarantula, which can grow to a foot in diameter, might captivate your inner child — or any child! Bakersfield’s Bug Zoo is a microcosmic world of bugs — all busily crawling, buzzing, gnawing, and in general, doing what bugs do. From behind the safe barrier of a glassed enclosure, you can get within inches if you want.

Yes, a very small percent of insects are harmful to humans by spreading disease, infecting our homes, and eating our crops and stored food.  But most insects are harmless and beneficial.  Insects are responsible for pollinating many important food crops as well as the flowers in our gardens.  They decompose dead plant and animal material, which helps to recycle nutrients back into the environment. The burrowing and tunneling activity of many insects aerates and mixes the soil.  Insects are very important food for wildlife and even for people in many countries outside of North America and Europe.  Insect products like honey, wax, silk, shellac, and dye are commercially important in some countries.  Additionally, some insects have been very important in the development of basic tools for genetic and other scientific research.  Without insects, the earth as we know it would not survive!

The public can see live insects in habitat displays, view insect specimens under microscopes, play games, take photos on a giant caterpillar or a giant ant, climb the gigantic spider web or visit the butterfly garden.  At scheduled times on weekends, Bakersfield’s Bug Zoo staff bring out the insects for the Incredible Insects in Action demonstration.

The gift shop will sell a variety of games, books, toys, clothes, candy, snacks, habitats, observation equipment, novelty items, jewelry and other misc. items.

Through Student Services we can encourage a child's interest and appreciation for some of nature's smallest critters starting at an early age.  All presentations are interactive, involve participation and show live bugs to students.

Parents can hold their child’s birthday in our Party Room where children can make a bug mask and a bug catcher, then learn the difference between types of bugs.  Each guest will be served a cupcake decorated with gummy worms.  The cost per person will also include admittance into the Bug Zoo.

“The Buzz” newsletter will deliver fascinating information on creepy crawly creatures.   The newsletter will be available on-line and will be mailed out to subscribers.

Bakersfield is the largest city (population: 283,936) and county seat of Kern County, whose entire population is 753,070, making it the 12th most populous county in California. The population of Kern County has seen tremendous growth in the past 5 years, with an 11% increase during that time while California's population has only increased by 6%. By the year 2010, the population of Kern County is projected to reach over a million people (California Department of Finance Demographic Research Unit, January 2006).

The amount of funds needed is $80,000.00.  This amount will give the company hard assets in the amount of $27,560.00 with the remainder to be applied towards the lease, refurbishing and decorating, licensing, insurance, supplies, advertising and other administrative costs.
There is an estimated average minimum profit of $22,500.00 per month for the first year of which I propose the investor(s) to take 50% as equity capital.

This projected profit is based on our goal to attract a minimum of 25% of the current visitors per the Kern County Museum of 90,547 and CALM of 52,000 then to also attract an additional 10% of the current population for Bakersfield which is 283,936 per 2005 estimates from U.S. Census Bureau.  This would give us an average attendance of 5,335 visitors per month over the course of the first year.

The investor will receive a monthly financial report by the 5th of each month.  The investor will be paid monthly from the profits with an estimated breakeven point within the first year of operation.
